Across the South and in parts of the North, black children were regularly bused long distances across district and county lines, because as late as the 1950s, some local governments valued the education of black children so little and segregation so much that they did not offer a single high school that black students could attend. Kansas’ state law allowed school systems to segregate at the behest of white parents, and so the Topeka school board bused Linda and other black children past white schools to preserve segregation.

The church is a little different, the school is a little different but it is definitely home.Further, while it is true that close-by schools may be convenient, white Americans’ veneration of neighborhood schools has never outweighed their desire to maintain racially homogeneous environments for their children. In my spare time I enjoy fishing, reading political and military history and of course watching the Kansas City Chiefs and any team playing baseball. We have four children and are awaiting our second grandchild. My wife Patti were married here at St Theresa’s more than 30 years ago. Forgive the cliché, but children are the future and to have a small part in preparing them for that future in a safe, faith based environment with the outstanding support of parents and the best staff I’ve ever worked with makes every day special. There is no parallel to opening a wider world to students and introducing them to that world. There is no blessing in life quite like pursuing your passion in the work place. I completed my BA in Secondary Education at Upper Iowa University in 2005 and hold the All Social Studies endorsement.įrom 2005 to 2018 I taught in Des Moines at Lincoln High School. After 15 years in the private sector, I decided it was time for a change. I graduated from Drake University in 1988 with a BS in Political Science. I’m a 1980 graduate of St Theresa’s and a 1984 graduate of Dowling High School. I don’t have the words to describe how wonderful it is to be back at St Theresa’s School. I feel such a sense of support and count this wonderful faith filled community as part of my family. Theresa because of the dedicated teachers, hardworking students and supportive, involved parents. I have recently earned my master’s degree in teaching. I then worked in the school lunch program at STCS while earning my teaching degree. I worked with children and their families in the social work field, then stayed home for a number of years with my children. I grew up in a tiny town in Northwest Iowa and moved to Des Moines for my first job after graduating from Buena Vista University. I am proud to be part of this wonderful, caring community. I went back to college, earning my bachelor’s degree in teaching. I felt the calling to serve the STCS community. I quickly realized that I wanted to be part of that. What drew me to STCS was the dedication, excellence and caring shown by the STCS teachers and community. Through these years, it has been obvious this was where we belong. Theresa as have all three of my children. Saint Theresa is such a big part of my life-mostly because it is hard not to love a place where learning and laughing go hand-in-hand. My husband Steve and I have been married for 25 years and we have three daughters who make life a blast! In addition to making memories as a family, I love to take photographs, sit on the beach with a good book, and travel with my husband. In 2000, I returned to Drake University to completed my Iowa Talented and Gifted certification.

I graduated from Dowling (Go Maroons!) and went to Saint Mary’s University in Minnesota graduating with a BA in English and Literature plus my teaching endorsement.
I grew up in Holy Trinity Parish in Beaverdale and graduated from eighth grade knowing I wanted to teach in a Catholic School in DSM. I am a product of 16+ years of learning and growing under the loving eyes of my Catholic School educators.
The kids are an honor to teach and life is Middle School is really fun, too. As a teacher, I love coming to work and having a front row seat to my student’s growth socially, academically, and emotionally. I believe in excellence in Catholic education! Since the day I joined the faculty at STCS, I have been in awe of the families, staff, and community who work tirelessly to give our students the best tools for the future.
